MY PHILOSOPHY

My coaching philosophy is very simple and stems from years of experience, both on and off the fields and in classrooms. I have coached for over 30 years in education-based sports and have been at the college level for the last 5. I have learned much through playing and coaching several sports and being successful in all areas I have worked. I have used my education, Master's in Coaching and Exercise Sciences, Bachelor of Science in PE/Kinesiology, and a lifetime of experiences to shape the way I interact with players, coaches, administration, and officials. I have served as a head coach for most of my career and as an athletic director and officials assignment coordinator for the last several. I have a great family with 2 teenage athletic children and am involved with the Women in Sports of Orange County, Coaches associations, and officiating crews in high school and college.

Here are some of my core beliefs and values that mold the person and coach I am:

  • I am honest and loyal and treat my players as if they were my own children and how I would want others to treat them. I tend to spoil my own children so try to do the same with my players.
  • I believe in the “Functional Family” when we are a team. We are there to support one another and be positive, especially during difficult times.
  • I encourage others and stay focused during all interactions on and off the field.
  • I am focused on success, accountability, and respect, and am very detail-oriented and use my organizational skills to be efficient with time and decisions.
  • I believe in having relationships with players such as I am friendly, but not friends, and fatherlike, without being their father.
  • Success comes from hard work and dedication so mottos such as “everyone wants to win but winners work to win”, “true character comes out through adversity”, “act like you have been there”, “be an ambassador or the game”, “respect is earned, not handed to you”, and “practice perfectly” are things said often.
  • Competition is also in the classroom and that there is a good reason for the order in wording: "student-athlete".
  • I do not believe in embarrassment on or off the field. Coaches are to try to bring the best out of the individual and teams to build strong character and success. I have had many coaches and players in my life and only remember how they treated me, rather than what they taught me or did.
  • Experience is going to be the true factor of success and the memories and relationships gained last longer than the player’s career.
  • I desire to be the best coach a player has had, and other coaches had to face.
